Poncho and Hat

for

 Baby or Toddler

2 hanks cotton fleece in Fairy Tale (from Angora Cottage)

Size H crochet hook

Broomstick handle or size 35 broomstick lace pin

Tapestry needle

Elastic (if needed for hat)

 

Cluster stitch:

*YO, insert hook in sp indicated, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * one more time, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

 

Broomstick lace stitch:  Draw a loop through the last st on hook and place on broomstick.  Sk base of that stitch and draw a loop through each of the remaining sc st across and place on needle. (For this project . . . should be multiple of 4).  Carefully slide loops from broomstick (don’t loose any on the way off!).  Insert crochet hook through 4 loops, yo and pull through. Sc on top of the 4 loops, five times (first time only), then four times on each subsequent set of 4 loops, across.

 

Picot stitch: Ch3, sl st in third ch from hook, sc in next st.

 

Poncho

Make 2 panels.

 

Ch 36.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch; repeat from * across.

Row 2: Ch1, turn; sc in first sc, (ch 1, sc in next sc) across.

Row 3: Repeat row 2.

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as first dc plus ch 1), turn; (work Cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) across, dc in last sc.

Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in first dc, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, (sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) across to last ch-1 sp, skip last ch-1 sp, sc in last dc.

Row 6 and 7: Ch 1, turn; sc in first sc, (ch 1, sc in next sc) across.

Row 8: Broomstick in multiples of 4 across.

Repeat rows 1-2 and 4-8  four MORE times for pattern.

Repeat rows 1-2 and 4-7 once more.

Do NOT finish off.

In corner stitch hdc 3 times.

*Along side, 7 hdc along Row 1-7 section, ch 5 along Row 8 (broomstick) section.  Repeat length of panel.

Hdc in each st on the end.*  Repeat ** for remainder of panel.

Sew the two panels together to form poncho. Weave in ends.

 

 

 

Collar

Row 1: Sc around decreasing at Vs.

Row 2: Hdc around decreasing at Vs.  Finish off; weave in ends.

 

Edge

Row 1: Sc around; 3 sc in each corner stitch.

Row 2: Picot, sc in next stitch, around.  Finish off; weave in ends.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hat

 

Ch 4, join.

Row 1:  8 hdc in loop, join

Row 2:  Ch 1, 2 hdc in each hdc around; join.

Row 3:  Ch 1, hdc in next 2 st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 st* around. Last 2 st hdc, 2 hdc; join.

Row 4:  Same as Row 3, but last 3 st – hdc in 2 st, 2 hdc in last st.; join.

Row 5:  Same as Row 3, but hdc in last st; join.

Row 6:  Same as Row 3, but hdc in last st; join.

Row 7:  Ch 1, hdc around (make sure you end with multiple of 4 stitches around.

Row 8:  Ch 1, *sc, ch1, sk st* around; join.

Row 9:  Ch 4, turn; *cluster in next ch1 sp, ch 1* around; join.

Row 10: Ch 1, turn; sc in sp, ch 1 sc in sp around; join.

Row 11: Same as 10.

Row 12: Broomstick lace around.

Row 13: Ch 1, turn; *sc in next st, ch 1, sk st, sc, ch1* around; join. (In this row, place stitches in FRONT LOOP ONLY).

Finish off and weave in ends.

 

Note:  If hat is too large at the bottom (for infant or small toddler) weave in elastic.
